Our 4 different types of leather & how you should care for them

Welcome to Shuflia! We are a small, family-owned leather goods business started with a love for the creation of beautiful leather pieces. We sell everything from bags, backpacks, notebooks, wallets and so much more.

We decided to start this business because we wanted to create goods that would last a lifetime. We wanted to ensure that if you purchased a Shuflia piece, it is not something that would be disposed of after a few years. It will be able to serve you for a long time and bring you pleasure as well!

We believe that leather is a material that doesn't need anything additional to make it stand out. It is self-sufficient and no two pieces are ever the same. We let our leather speak for itself and all of our pieces are made with a clear purpose in mind. It is not as decorative as some of the other leather pieces out there only because we wanted the focus to be on the leather and having a piece that has a clear purpose.

Founded in 2008, we are so happy to have come this far. We make everything from scratch and with that we have a guarantee that every product is of the highest quality.

In this article, we wanted to share our four different types of leather, a little backstory about them, and how we suggest you should care for them.

We can sew about everything from our catalog with our different types of leather. You can choose the type of leather you would like us to use as well as the colour of the leather and we will custom make your lovely piece for you!

So, let's get into our different types of leather, shall we?

ALCOR

Our Alcor leather features a smooth surface structure and no embossing. By using the grinding motion we ensure that the leather has a much smoother surface that can be used for bags or even notebooks. The usual thickness of the leather is around 1.5mm to 1.7mm.

Alcor is known to be a natural polished leather without any hyrdroemeric embossing with multiple coatings. This then gives it a two-tone effect.

The front surface is absolutely beautiful. It also has a semi-glossy visual to it. The foldings are also a lot lighter which means that it is usually used for bags or wallets as mentioned.

As you can see in the images, we have eight different colors that you can choose from and these colors will not only showcase your personality but turn heads when you walk past with a Shuflia piece.

Alcor Leather Care Instructions

To take care of our Alcor leather, it's not too hard to maintain. Alcor leather is overall not capricious so are rest assured that nothing really changes as much over time besides the normal wear and tear.

To take care of it to ensure that it does stay as good as when you just get it, we have a few tips and tricks for it.

  1. Rub moisturizing balm on the leather. The best way to do this is to use a dry cloth and put some balm on it, then gently rub it into the leather.

  2. At least three to four times a year, you should treat the leather with appropriate leather impregnations or wax that have a high content of natural fat. This will help give the leather a shine and also to moisturize it. Leather dries out fast and if it does dry out, it will be a lot more prone to scratches that is difficult to remove.

  3. Please do not clean leather with water or any chemical detergents. Avoid alcohol-based liquids as well.

  4. It is also crucial that you do not use any heating devices to dry the leather if it does get wet.

  5. When you are not using the leather good, you should always fill the bag or backpack with paper or stuffing to make sure that the leather does not lose its shape.

CRAZY

Featuring a smooth surface with no embossing, we also used grinding to get the front surface presentable. The normal leather thickness is usually around 1.5mm to 2.0mm.

It is a natural matter leather and the material might remind you of nubuck but it is denser. Crazy gives you a more vintage feel overall. However, it is good for you to note that scratches can easily appear on the leather if you touch it. But, over time, the leather will regain its original appearance and the scratches will become less noticeable. Basically, it is a piece of leather that is like wine, that ages gracefully with time.

Here are some of the hacks you should be doing to take care of your Shuflia Crazy piece.

  1. To smoothen out the scratches and abrasions on the Crazy leather, cellulose wipes are the way to go. Cellulose wipes that are best used for water-based contamination, it won't harm the leather as much as other wipes.

  2. Or, you can also use a clean cloth, moisten it and gently wipe the surface on which you have seen the scratches.

  3. If you do get your Crazy leather really dirty, you can use a sponge that's soaked in a mild soap solution to clean it out.

  4. Again, please do not use any hair dryers or heating devices to dry the product as heat can crack the leather.

  5. Avoid detergents, chemicals or alcohol-based cleaners when you are cleaning the leather.

  6. Again, try to treat the leather three to four times a year with wax that have a high content of natural fat.

KAISER

Our Kaiser leather features a smooth surface with a dusty pattern for embossing. Again, grinding is used for the front surface and the leather thickness is around 1.4mm to 1.7mm.

Kaiser is a natural and environmentally friendly and smooth leather. It has a flat surface with a dusty pattern. You can also see a slight sheen on the leather as well. A lot of the produces made with this leather gives an air of elegance and royalty.

Here's how we suggest to take care of our Kaiser leather.

  1. If there is dirt on it, use a soft damp cloth or a damp sponge to wipe it off. If the dirt is bad, you can also use a mild soft solution with a few drops of ammonia.

  2. Again, always naturally dry your piece if it does get wet and avoid using the dryer or any artificial drying methods.

  3. Avoid using wet wipes, stiff brushes or any abrasive surfaces to clean the product.

  4. Also, try to store the Kaiser leather products in a dark place and out of direct sunlight. This is to ensure that there is no chance for mold or mildew to grow. As leather is susceptible to mold if the leather is stored in a damp area.

FLOTAR

Our Flotar leather has a corrugated surface with a 1.2mm to 1.4mm thickness. The Flotar leather does have an interesting surface structure. After the tanning process, the leather has a corrugated surface which does give the leather a lot of character and a special type of charm.

Flotar is also extremely special not only for it's three-dimensional surface but it is also valued for the softness, breathabiluty as well as the undeniable strength and elasticity. Overall, it is an extremely versatile piece of leather. It usually has a matte front surface but it is also possible to have a glossy surface as well.

In terms of care, these are the best ways to take care of our Flotar leather.

  1. When your Flotar leather piece gets a little dull, cut an orange peel! We know that sounds weird, but hear us out. Use a freshly cut orange peal and rub it on the leather. This will refresh the way your leather looks.

  2. If it's dirty, or if you haven't cleaned it for a while, please clean it with a soft sponge that is slightly soaked in a gentle soap solution.

  3. Again, never use a heating device to dry it out or even chemical detergents or alcohol-based liquids.

  4. Please also protect the leather with wax and water-proofing sprays for your leather.
